Oaxaca Old Fashioned
Smoke and agave. Flame the orange peel if you want the full show.
Ingredients
- 45 ml Tequila
- 15 ml Mezcal
- 7 ml Agave syrup
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
Method
Stir over ice, strain over a large cube.

If you're missing something
- Mezcal → Tequila — loses the smoke, which in most of these drinks is the entire point
- Agave syrup → Sugar syrup — neutral, and loses the affinity agave has with tequila
Where it comes from
Phil Ward created it around 2007 while at Death & Co in New York, later opening the mezcal bar Mayahuel. Splitting the base between tequila and mezcal became a widely copied move.
